1. SLIDE
The 1st video in the series. I suggest you start with this one. These videos take you through a tour of how I Compose, Record, and Mix my songs in Propellerhead's "Reason". "Reason" is one of a handful of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) used to create music these days. I use green call-out bubbles in the videos to explain what your looking at. You'll see that the videos flow smoother and faster as you go through the series. "Slide" is one of my simpler compositions, with a Soul influence, and one of my personal favorites. Please listen to the tunes on speakers better than your laptop or phone.
2. RHODES
This song is named after the classic, vintage Rhodes electric piano, invented during WWII to save piano material for the war but still provide "piano therapy". It became a staple for much of the 1960's Soul and 1970's Funk sound, and is the main keyboard instrument through much of this song. This is one of my earlier compositions on this album.
3. BOUNCE
I wanted to create an upbeat song that Bounces in both rhythm and stereo. I call this style of music "Organic Electronic" because the style is obviously electronic, but I use mostly non-synth (organic) instruments. The song originally used a basketball bounce for the bass drum, but the latent ringing got in the way of the other instruments. My first (and only!) attempt to record scratch with a keyboard.
4. SFORZANDO
"Sforzando" (pronounced: Sfort-zahn-doe) is Italian for "punctuated", and is a term used to describe a brass instrument's style of a Swell, started with a small Blast. You'll hear it used throughout this song. Almost all of the brass instruments were orchestrated using my keyboard. This one has a bit of Soul and Funk with a taste of Swing.
5. SUNSHINE
Proof that white boys can only try to play Reggae! :-) I was shooting for another upbeat song, but this one with a sense of warmth and happiness. I've always had a taste for Reggae, so I started this one with a drum rhythm similar to Bob Marley's "One Drop" and took the song where it wanted to go.
6. Drive
"Drive" is a song that I had kicked along for years, first intending it to be a background song while driving. That's one reason why it's so long (and named Drive). This is another "Organic Electronic" song, but this one's a bit more Electronic than Organic. This video is a bit different than the other 5. It takes you through a rough breakdown of how I Mix and Master a song. I'm always learning and modifying my approach, but this could be helpful if you're just starting out, and insightful if you're simply curious.
